African Reptiles and Venom, present snake courses for the general public, outdoors people, field guides, farmers, snake keepers, doctors, vets, mining companies, developers, etc. In short, anybody that may come in contact with snakes or a  snakebite will benefit from these courses. These courses were researched and compiled after a number of people had approached us for information on snakebite and the handling of snakes. Mike Perry who heads the courses has been catching snakes since 1965 and works professionally with venomous snakes as he extracts venom for antivenom production and keeps 500 snakes for this purpose.

Snake Courses

We present snake courses for the general public, outdoors people, field guides, farmers, snake keepers, doctors, vets, mining companies, developers, etc. In short, anybody that may come in contact with snakes or snakebite will benefit from these courses. The courses were researched and compiled after a number of people had approached us for information on snakebite and the handling of snakes.  Our courses are FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) approved as specialist courses. The Snake ID and Snakebite Treatment course is registered with the WITS Health CPD Office and medical doctors and other health professionals that pass the test can claim 5 CPD points (Continued Professional Development).
Participants get certificates at the end of all the courses.  The validity of the certificates are two years.

Snake Courses for the public

The Snake Identification, Awareness, First Aid protocol and medical Snakebite Treatment Course
R1300 per person (incl. VAT)

This course covers the following:

  1. Identification of the dangerous and medical important snakes.
    2. Symptoms and syndromes of snakebite.
    3. First Aid protocol
    4. Medical Snakebite treatment.
    5. Allergies to anti-venom and treatment of anaphylaxis

Doctors and Medical staff will earn 5 CPD points on completion of this course.

Venomous snake handling R800 per person (incl. VAT)

This is a course suitable for individuals who has to capture problematic snakes that pose a risk to the immediate public or workplace.
It is required of anybody who wants to keep venomous snakes to do a certified snake handling course.
The Snake Handling course will teach you:

Skills on how to safely capture a snake
Using the correct equipment for the correct situation.
Practical handling of four different venomous snakes under the watchful eye of Mike Perry and the rest of the African Reptiles & Venom team.

Advanced Black Mamba handling R600 per person (incl. VAT)

Learn more about these dangerous snakes and how to handle them correctly. It starts with a short presentation which follows with practical handling of wild black mambas.  This is to ensure that everyone has firsthand experience of what to expect when encountering a Black Mamba in the wild.
This course is applicable to individuals that go out in the bush, work at lodges in Black mamba distribution areas, snake enthusiasts or simply someone wanting to chase up their adrenaline levels.

Applicable to companies that are situated in areas where black mambas occur, Particular to areas like Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga and KZN provinces as well as area north of South Africa.

Corporate Snake courses

African Reptiles and Venom presents snake courses for the mining sector, agricultural developers, construction companies, medical professionals, field guides, farmers, etc.  Anybody that may come in contact with snakes or snakebite will benefit from the courses. In the Mining industry snakebite is seen as an occupational hazard which could lead to the closure of the mine or site for a number of days resulting in a loss of revenue.

Snake Awareness R750 per person Vat incl. and the minimum quantity of people is 25, traveling and accommodation will be added where applicable

This course is used by companies that have a need to have most or all of their work force becomes aware of snakes as part of their Environmental Health and Safety policies.
Staff will be trained on:

Importance of snakes in nature
Dispelling myths about snakes
How to act when coming into contact with snakes
Anti Venom
First Aid protocol for snakebite

Snake Awareness & Venomous snake handling skills R1400 per person (VAT incl.) and the minimum people are 17 per group, traveling and accommodation will be added where applicable

In addition to the above you will also learn the following:

Skills on how to safely remove snakes
How to use the right equipment for your catch and release
Rules and regulations with regards to snake capturing

Advanced Black Mamba handling R600 per person

Learn more about these dangerous snakes and how to handle them correctly.

Training consists of:

A short presentation about the behavior of Black Mambas
Equipment to be used when capturing a Black Mamba
Practical handling of wild Black Mambas.  (This is to ensure that everyone has hands on experience of what to expect when encountering a Black Mamba in the wild.)

Applicable to companies that are situated in areas where black mambas occur, particularly in areas like Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga and KZN provinces as well as area north of South Africa and other parts of Africa)

Snake Identification, Snakebite treatment, First Aid protocol with Venomous Snake Handling R2100 per person (VAT incl.) with a minimum of 10 people per session, traveling and accommodation will be added where applicable
